Cheongsam Fabric Styles and Techniques: Appluque
The term is derived from the French verb appliquer which means "to put on" or "to overlay", and refers to the application of decoration onto the surface of a fabric.
This is usually achieved by cutting out fabric or lace designs and attaching them to another fabric or lace by means of embroidery or stitching.  It is one of the methods used by Shanghaiese tailors to embellish cheongsam meant for formal occasions.
Trimmings, including cording created by twisting two or more yarns, together, are also often used by tailors to decorate a plain fabric, such as silk satin.
