I think there is some truth to the idea that brides choose less attractive dresses for their bridesmaids to make themselves look better- not in the "make them ugly" sense, but more of the "make a nice background" sense.

The cliche that bridesmaid dresses are ugly is often due to the fact that brides try too hard to fit a theme or budget without dressing each person individually. Also putting the same dress on different body shapes and skin tones is often not flattering either.

The most successful bridesmaid dresses are the ones where a bride gives a general color range or theme, and the attendants choose their own to correspond to the aesthetic.
