Follow these suggestions for a smoother, crisis-free shopping and alternation process.

- Have everyone get measured (height, bust, waist, and hip), and know that bridesmaids’ dresses run on ego two sizes smaller than ready-to-wear. If in doubt, order larger - it’s easier to take in a garment than to let one out.

- Order all dresses at the same time and through the same store.

- Check in with the store occasionally to find out the status of your order.

- Tell bridesmaids early on that three will be an extra expense for alternations, so they can budget for them.

- When you place the order, get the style number, manufacturer, fabric, colour, sizes, delivery date, deposit, and balance due in writing. Also get the cancellation and refund policy in writing.
